How to Measure Your Wrist for the Perfect Fit

A watch that fits well feels like it was made for you. One that doesn’t will slide around, dig into your skin, or simply look wrong. The good news is that finding your perfect fit takes five minutes and a soft measuring tape — or even a strip of paper and a ruler.

Start with your wrist size. Wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist just below the wrist bone, where you’d normally wear a watch. Keep it snug but not tight; you should be able to slip a finger underneath. Note the measurement in centimetres or inches. Most adult wrists fall between 14cm and 20cm (about 5.5 to 8 inches). If you don’t have a tape, wrap a strip of paper around your wrist, mark where it overlaps, then measure the paper flat with a ruler.

Your wrist size guides your case diameter — the width of the watch face. As a rough rule, wrists under 16cm suit cases of 34–38mm; wrists of 16–18cm suit 38–42mm; and larger wrists can carry 42–46mm comfortably. But diameter isn’t the whole story. The lug-to-lug distance — how far the watch stretches across your wrist from one strap attachment to the other — matters more. If the lugs overhang your wrist, the watch will look oversized no matter what the diameter says. Ideally, the lug-to-lug should be slightly less than the flat width of your wrist.

Case thickness counts too. A slim 8mm dress watch slips under a cuff effortlessly, while a 14mm chronograph makes a bolder statement but needs room. Try to balance thickness with your wrist: slimmer wrists generally suit slimmer cases.

Finally, think about the strap. The strap or bracelet should allow about a finger’s width of movement — snug enough that the watch doesn’t rotate, loose enough that it doesn’t pinch. Leather straps mould to your wrist over days of wear; metal bracelets can be sized by removing links.

Fit is personal. Numbers guide you, but the mirror decides. A well-fitting watch disappears on the wrist until you need it — and that’s exactly how it should feel.
